HEPATITIS A VACCINE
PATIENT INFORMATION

HEPATITIS A:
Is a highly contagious illness. The predominant modes of transmission are person-to-person via the fecal-oral route and via contaminated food.


HEPATITIS A VACCINE:
Is indicated for active immunization of persons >2 years of age against disease by Hepatitis A virus for those considered to be at high risk.


CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • any acute illness.
  • history of hypersensitivity to any component.
  • immunosuppression.
  • pregnancy or nursing mothers.


RISKS:

 

• adverse reactions to Hepatitis A vaccine are mild and infrequent, consisting of localized redness and swelling at the injection site.

 

• may also cause headache, fatigue, fever, malaise, loss of appetite and nausea.

 

• less frequent problems include itching, rash, hives, sore throat, upper respiratory tract infection, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, joint and muscle aches, enlarged lymph nodes, sleep disturbance, dizziness and photophobia.



If you have a serious or unusual problem after getting the Hepatitis A vaccine, call your physician or go to a medical facility promptly. If you have a reaction to the vaccine, write down exactly what happened and report to a nurse at UL Lafayette Student Health Service by calling 482-5464.
