| UL LAFAYETTE EDUCATOR SELECTED AS EMERGING LEADER |

| Peter Sheppard, assistant professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, is an Emerging Leader according to PDK International – a leading association of education professionals. A committee made up of PDK’s past Emerging Leaders selected the 20 honorees from a competitive field of applicants. “The 20 members of the 2008-09 Class of Emerging Leaders embody the PDK tenets of leadership, research, and service,” said William Bushaw, PDK’s executive director. “They represent the best of the profession.” Throughout his career, Sheppard served as a coordinator for summer remediation programs, a consultant for the Louisiana Department of Education, a middle school math and science teacher at Southern University Laboratory School, and program manager for STEM teacher preparation and adjunct professor at Louisiana State University. He has presented at state, regional, and national conferences, and published in professional journals, as well as writing grants. “ My vision for future leadership endeavors is to be among those deemed champions for equity in mathematics education,” said Sheppard. “I would like to contribute to finding ways to curtail mathematics achievement differences between those who are inherently underprivileged and those whose households are economically stable.” For more information on PDK’s 2008-09 Class of Emerging Leaders, including podcast interviews with the honorees, go to www.pdkemergingleaders.org.
